Don't Forget About Dad
By Sarah Garr

With all of the commotion and excitement, it is understandable that the new dad sometimes gets left out of the gift giving equation when the new baby is about to make his arrival. Dad needs a gift also. There are the obvious new baby gifts, new mommy gift baskets and sibling gifts, but what about dad?

New dads often feel the same anxiety and excitement that the new mom does when the new baby is coming. Many dads don't show these emotions, but they are there.

Some of the best things to do for a new dad are easy if you use a little detective work. Many times a gift certificate to dad's favorite restaurant or his favorite after work pub will show that you are thinking about his quick trips for time away from the new chaos happening at home. It would probably be a good idea to make sure he has a wristwatch or timer that can go off when he is enjoying his solitude, so he doesn't get caught up in the latest sporting event being broadcast on the bar television. Mom will appreciate that!

Admit it, dad likes to wander around the local hardware store. A gift certificate to his favorite "Man Store" would make those "Constructing the Nursery" adventures a little less painful.

Every new dad has his own view of changing diapers. Yes, no matter what he says, he will eventually change a diaper. Some simple items will make the diaper duty a little more palatable. First, a great gag gift for a new dad is a gas mask. The carbon type with two air vents on each side of the mouth makes a great statement. Who knows, he might even sport it on his face when it's his turn to get up in the middle of the night. Plastic gloves are imperative to any new dad. A huge box of 1000 will be enough to get him started. Have you seen the gallon jugs of hand sanitizer? You will need at least three. Put them everywhere. Dads feel more 'clean' if they can slather sanitizer on their hands every twenty minutes. To keep the "Dad Changing Diapers" supplies neatly organized, you can invest in an around the waist tool belt. He will feel comfortable with all of the proper equipment (diapers, wipes, gloves etc.) within hands reach. The tool belt can be decorated easily with fabric paint, but I wouldn't go too frilly if this is his first child. Subsequent births require more hilarious embellishment on the tool belt.

So, when buying those adorable baby gifts, don't forget something for the new dad, he's going to need it.
